Living Canvas

On 20th November 2012 at Falmouth University

My most recent performance, The Living Canvas took me to personal limits that I could not have imagined.
Inspired by the work of Yoko Ono and in particular Cut Piece, I made the Living Canvas this is a whole piece plain skin suit that completely envelops me, I became the Living Canvas. I then invited art students and lecturers to paint or draw on me. We filmed the event and documented my thoughts and theirs.
I released control of the actual artwork to the invited guests, however the ultimate control was mine as I could, and did stop the performance when I wanted to.  The result was more than just the suit, this was just a cast off a byproduct., The actual experience and insight I gained and shared with others was thought provoking in terms of past life experience and new physical and emotional responses to all of those involved.
For me I put barriers in place however I was able to overcome them made will transfer this into future experiences.
Just like life, marks and expressions were made on the skin suit, some remained visible and others disappeared under layers of paint but they were still there. I remember the strokes and the strikes of the brush, the coldness of the paint and the light and voices I heard through the suit, the experience of the Living Canvas changed me.
